"I too have the welcome afliction of being spiritually connected to animals and children. Particularly very young children and dogs." Isn't that odd? Me too! I just responded about that. I love your phrase "welcome affliction!" Except not so welcome with the human ilk, which makes it sort of mysterious. Why is this little girl literally reaching out to me from the grocery cart seat, her parents literally saying: "She hates everybody!" in amazement, and I have no interest in cuddling up, whatsoever? weird.
Oh, Rohn...such a tender story. My heart breaks for this beautiful boy in the insecure world that humans have made. The photograph captures the wisdom and intelligence in this gorgeous, majestic relative of ours. If you know the shelter that he was taken to, you can certainly call and ask how he's doing. Or you can tell us and we can call. I can't remember where you're located, is it Los Angeles?
Of course you couldn't take him in but he had a good experience with a gentle, caring human and that won't be lost on him. Someone will be very lucky to adopt this boy…I'm praying for him. ❤️🩹🙏
I have read and followed you for years from hearing you on Thom Hartmann show and the subtext and innuendo in this essay has totally blown my head off. Do you do this on purpose?
It's a universal challenge of our living "consciousness," to face the reality that no one of us can ever save "them all." I share with you the (odd?) gift that critters and kids seem to cotton to me, in my case with the combination that I have only ever wanted to not be bugged by kids! Dogs, cats and horses, most anything critter-wise, I have many stories of them being OK with me and mutual, but darn if I haven't had a few moments when somebody's goldarn baby was beaming all over me, to the point that the parents were amazed, and i was, like, lookin' at the wrong girl here, kid. But obviously you and the dog are good. Better than some horses I did what seemed OK at the time, but looking back, hard. If it's any comfort, I confidently predict, if you and Mitch McConnell happen to approach the heavenly gates in whatever the mystery timeless zone is, St. Peter will wave you in and Mitch will be going the other way. Probably that dog will be there with your ticket. So there. Happy New Year!
I am, however, curious to know how many recognized the, as Mr. Kent put it, "subtext" of the article. Clearly he/she did but the piece has much to say about racism, slavery, history, humanity, white insecurity masked as supremacy, politics and even gender.
Oh Rohn, what a tough decision. I was seriously considering what I would have done in the same situation. Probably, exactly the same thing.
I have a rescue, a "scary" purebred pit bull who couldn't be sweeter if she tried. She was on the streets and was obviously abused (she has burn scars on her back), and then locked in a room in a cage by a family who should never have adopted her. She was 30 pounds overweight when I adopted her.
When Winnie escaped one time, as I had recently moved and she discovered pushing the screen door open was very easy, she was returned home because of her chip. Some wonderful gardener called animal control and I got the phone call and email. So let's assume Mr. German Shepard is chipped as many dogs are these days and he is living happily ever after with his owner.
Well Rohn, that scenario does at least make ME feel better. You?
beautifully written.
Pretty high praise considering the source.
Once again you have tugged on my heart strings and shown yourself to us as the spiritual being that you are.
I find commonality in nearly every piece you write, and this one in particular.
I too have the welcome afliction of being spiritually connected to animals and children. Particularly very young children and dogs.
I like to attribute this connection to an open heart and an honest soul, as you obviously know.
If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion to someone with your high level of intellect, please don't allow this dog to be destroyed.
As much for your soul as for the life of that spirit you recognized in the dog.
Having known you for so many years, I know that you are extraordinarily inteligent and resourceful.
I would only hope that you could find a home for this lost spirit that found his way to you for what seems to me to be an ethereal reason.
The gift of your feelings of betrayal and regret is an opportunity for clarity and cleansing given to your spirit by a stray dog.
I only hope that you can accept the gift and reciprocate.
Be well,
Joel
Perhaps I will give a cogent response to this greatest of comments, someday. I lack the words at the moment Brother Joel.

An absolutely great post. I wish it could be read & discussed in every school in the world.
Wow. Knowing you, I'm thinking he may yet come to live with you and Cojack.
We'd like that.

Verily, he weighs heavily upon my heart.
I'm sure he does… And mine too. I can't stop looking at him...♥️

Not sure I fully understand your query but hopeful that your head is still attached 😍

That is my hope.
There's hope that he has a chip and will be reunited with his owner. .
As I mentioned to another of our readers, that is my hope.
Of course there's going to be bail involved if the owner is located.
